Heartaches

Whitney came through her surgery fine. It was roughly about an 8-hour surgery, I think. Time zones may have messed me up, but anyways . . . Lots of people around here were praying for her. I know she has a long recovery in front of her, though. And she knows what to expect now.

Surprisingly, I don’t have a whole lot to say today. Other than the fact that I’m confused right now. About a lot of things. I guess I’m really learning Psalm 37:4-7. That whole rest and wait part is the one that I think I struggle with most. Which I guess could tie into the fact that I should trust more. I just need to take it day by day and not try to figure it all out.

I Quit

I’m so excited about quitting my job at Chick-fil-A! Seriously. My parents and I talked, and they suggested that I don’t work this semester since I’m not finding the time that I need to get all my work done for classes. So, hopefully this week will be my last one there. I’ve never quit a job before though, so this will be fun.

I’m taking 2 weeks off just to see how my time is panning out, and then if I find that I would be able to take on a couple cleaning/babysitting jobs, I’m going to try to find something in that area. I feel like such a moocher.

Whitney

My cousin is an amazing person. At the age of 16, she’s already been through at least 2 heart surgeries, maybe 3, and is headed into another one this Tuesday. And through it all, God has given her the opportunity to not only be a witness to the doctors and nurses, but also a blessing to her family and friends.

When she was born, she had to have a heart transplant. I don’t remember if she had any other surgeries after that until last year. She went in for her check-up and they said there were problems with her aortic valve. They repaired the valve using bovine tissue and unfortunately, this tissue has calcified and caused more blockage. (My aunt is the source of all the fancy terms.) So Tuesday, they’ll go in and take her pulmonary valve and use that in place of the aortic valve. Then the pulmonary valve will be replaced with a homographic (probably porcine) valve. Again, I can’t really explain all those terms, but that’s what I was told.

It’s really great, though, because Whitney was the one who decided to do it Tuesday. Her doctor was talking about possibilities of late February and then told her he did have an opening on Tuesday and she said, “Let’s do it!” God has given her an amazing amount of His grace to get her through all the struggles. And she has such a good attitude about everything. If you knew Whitney, wow. She’s just one of the sweetest people ever.

It’s interesting . . . I found all this out yesterday (the 20th) and read my Proverb-a-Day. So Proverbs 20:24 says, Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord, How then can man understand His way?

Not only was that cool, but it was just something I totally needed yesterday. Things have been getting confusing around here, so it was just another thing to reassure me that God’s still in control and I don’t have to understand!

Mack 223

Only 3 full days of classes have come and gone and I’m already somewhat overwhelmed. I mean, I know that every semester I always think . . . What have I gotten myself into? . . . and every semester I make it through just fine and completely sane at the end. It’s true that this is the biggest load I’ve ever had, but chances are I’ll still make it.

Not to mention I don’t have to worry about having a painting or drawing class on my back. Whew. Only design this semester, thank goodness.

Oh . . . should I say happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day? I don’t know what you say on MLK Day. So whatever should be said, consider it said to you.

Did I mention that I moved rooms right before the end of last semester? Well, I did. And so now I have 3 new roommates which are completely awesome. Lynley, Jen, & Kelly. We’re going to have a fun semester. I can tell already.

In fact, the other night they decided to play a trick on me. Due to the fact that I work for Vintage, they thought they would leave me a surprise when I came back to go to bed.

Normally, I just use my cell phone as my light when I’m walking around the room and trying to get ready for bed. At this point of the night, I was ready to sleep. So I climbed up in my bed, put my blankets down . . . this may be a foreign idea to those of you who don’t attend BJU, but basically it’s for privacy. It’s like having curtains for your bed. It keeps the light out and some noise occassionally . . . so I did all that and was setting my alarms on my phone when I noticed this weird pattern by my pillow.

I thought to myself . . . What is that? Did somebody put a hat in my bed? When I went to further investigate, i.e., moved my phone away from my face a little further, I saw eyes. And a nose. And I almost fell out of the bed. It was a head. One of those cosmotology model heads. The pattern I saw was the buzzed hair. So, instead of screaming, I decided to try to catch my breath and remove the head from beside my pillow. When I went to pick it up, though, the hair freaked me out even more because of the texture. I definitely jumped and then grabbed the head and threw it out the blankets. It almost landed on the heater. Then it took me about 10 minutes to regain composure and laugh about the whole thing to myself.

My roommates denied the whole thing the next morning and blamed it on my RA. But they confessed later! See, I told you we were gonna have fun! They also soaped my toothbrush. Peach soap has an amazing effect on teeth. Sparkly white smile!

Resolved

I love New Year’s resolutions. Until about February, that is. But this year I resolved to keep my resolutions. Hah. And yes, as one of my resolutions is the all-popular “lose weight” scenario. My resolution is more just to be healthy, though . . . I think. I’m taking nutrition this semester which is going to be an awesome class. I really get into that type of thing. You should go to mypyramid.gov. The food pyramid was changed about a year ago, and that website helps layout a tailored food consumption guide. Pretty cool, actually.

So anyways, I’ve been drinking a lot more water (80-90 oz. a day). Did you know you’re supposed to drink half your body weight in ounces every day? Ok, so I don’t know how to phrase it to get it across . . . let me do an example. If someone weighs 100 lbs. they’re supposed to drink 50 oz. of water daily. And please, don’t think I weigh 160-180 lbs. because I don’t. I like it because I just feel so much cleaner.
